Cancer Patients Quality of Life Improved With Chiropractic

An article published in the January issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics follows two case studies of patients with various types of serious cancer.  The article follows the chiropractic care and its effect on these patients pain and quality of life.

The first patient was a 57-year-old man with serious terminal pancreatic cancer.  This patient received chiropractic care during the later stages of the disease.  In the remaining time the patient had before succumbing to the disease it was documented that the patient had significantly less pain and was able to reduce his medications.  The journal article summed up this case by stating, "In this case chiropractic care was able to provide significant pain relief, reduce the amount of pain medication being taken (as well as the potential side effects), and temporarily improve the quality of life for a patient with terminal cancer."

The second patient was a 54-year-old man recovering from surgery for lung cancer.  This patient was continually suffering from upper back pain and had gotten no relief for over one year.  At that point the patient began chiropractic care.  In this case the patient received immediate relief and was able to discontinue all pain medication after two chiropractic visits.

The principles of chiropractic make it plain that the focus of chiropractic care is not to directly treat the patient's pain but rather to assist the body and allow the body's own healing abilities to work at that person's maximum potential.  These case studies show that ability and the effect on people suffering with serious conditions.  The Journal article states it best when it said, "These clinical examples offer 2 specific instances of how chiropractic may improve the quality of a cancer patient's life."

Did you know Celebrities swear by Chiropractic?

Celebrities such as Mel Gibson and Arnold Schwarzenegger use chiropractic on a regular basis.  On the cover of a recent edition of  TV Guide Insider, is a picture of Mel Gibson dressed for a recent movie.  In that story they talk about how Mr. Gibson uses chiropractic on a regular basis. In the article he states, "I got a chiropractor to come along to the shoot, because they can actually stick you back together within 15 minutes. He used to come every other week, from Los Angeles to South Carolina - spend a week and work on the entire crew. All the stunt guys were like, Oh, fix my disc. He is putting their discs back in. The guy is amazing."

Arnold Schwarzenegger is another fan and recipient of chiropractic care.  Each year in Columbus Ohio Arnold addresses a chiropractic fitness symposium held in conjunction with his "Arnold Classic". At the event in February, he made the following remarks, "Chiropractic is about health and fitness. Chiropractic is about natural, preventive health care. What you are doing, and I have experienced this for the last 30 years myself on my own body, means that whenever I have a problem - or even if I don't have a problem - and I go to a chiropractor, my problems are gone for a long time."

Chiropractic and Bedwetting

Several recent studies have shown the benefits of chiropractic care for children suffering from "Nocturnal Enuresis" more commonly known as bedwetting.  Several studies published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics showed marked improvement in children with this problem over children who did not receive chiropractic care.

In one study 171 children suffering with enuresis averaged 7 nights of bed wetting per week prior to the study. After the children were given some initial chiropractic care the average child reduced the number of "wet" nights to 4 nights per week. A full 25% of the children receiving chiropractic showed a 50% reduction in wet nights. In addition, only 1% of the children were considered "dry" prior to the study and prior to receiving chiropractic care. After the study 15% of the children were then considered "dry".

In another study, 46 primary enuretic children were studied. Of this group 31 were placed under chiropractic care while 15 were in the control group and did not receive any chiropractic care. The results of this study showed a 17.9% decrease in wet nights for the chiropractic group. Over the same period of time no change was noted for the control group who did not receive any chiropractic care.

Amazingly, improvement in some of the studies was shown to be immediate after the first adjustment and remain stable thereafter.

Sunlight

 by Dr. Lyle Norton

"Doc, what does sunlight have to do with health?"  A lot.  You probably have heard about the SAD lights that give full spectrum light (artificial sunlight) so that the neurotransmitters that improve mood and help prevent depression are produced.  The sunlight entering the eye causes different hormones to be produced that initiate both wakefulness and antidepressant activity.  That is part of the function of sunlight.  It elevates the spirit and lightens the mood.  A sunny day just makes you feel like singing.

An obvious reason for sunlight is that it warms you.  It is pretty amazing when you think about it.  The sun is 93 million miles away.  If it were 1 million miles closer, we would burn up.  If it were 1 million miles further away, we would freeze.  The balance of heat on our planet is an amazingly precise thing. It's almost as if Someone planned it that way!

Sunlight is needed on the skin to synthesize Vitamin D from 7-hydroxycholesterol.  It is the ultraviolet light that accomplishes this conversion in the skin.  For young individuals that are fair skinned, 30 minutes a day on just the face and hands is adequate to convert the needed amount.  It is proportional to the amount of skin exposure so that if your arms and legs are also exposed the amount of time needed is lessened.  If you are dark skinned the amount of time needed is greater.  Vitamin D is needed to absorb calcium and enhances the immune system and inhibits tumors.  Elderly people produce Vitamin D at about half the rate that younger people do and since calcium isn't absorbed as well in the elderly, the need for sunlight is greater.  Depending on who you are and where you live, it may be more of a challenge for you! to get enough sunlight.

"Doc, I thought sun tanning caused cancer.  Are you saying it's good for me?"  Balance is the key.  Too much sunlight can cause damage.  Too little is not good either.  If you don’t get enough sunlight (Vitamin D) you are at risk for depression, osteoporosis, colorectal cancer and breast cancer.  Other cancers need more study to make a determination on how they are affected by sunlight.  Suffice it to say, you need sunlight, just not too much.  So go for a walk in the sunshine today!
